Paws of Gratitude: Honoring Our Heroes on Veterans Day
This Tuesday, November 11th, is a very special day. You may know it as Veterans Day, or perhaps you’ve heard it called Armistice Day or Remembrance Day. Whatever name we use, it is a sacred day set aside to pause, remember, and give our deepest thanks to the brave men and women who have served in our nation‘s military.
As a family, it’s a time to reflect on the freedoms God has blessed us with—freedoms that were protected by the selfless sacrifice of others. It’s a day to teach our children about courage, service, and gratitude.
A Legacy of Peace and Sacrifice
This day originally began as Armistice Day, marking the end of World War I on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918.
- In the United States, it evolved into Veterans Day, a time to honor all veterans, living and dead, who have served our country in war or peace. We celebrate their willingness to serve and say “thank you” for their service.
- In many other parts of the world, like Canada, the United Kingdom, and Australia, it is known as Remembrance Day, often marked by wearing a red poppy. It is a more solemn day focused on remembering those who gave their lives in service.
No matter the specific focus, the heart of the day is the same: profound gratitude.
A Faithful Heart of Gratitude
As Christians, we are called to a life of gratitude and to honor those who serve. The Bible speaks powerfully about the nature of sacrifice. In the Gospel of John, Jesus gives us the ultimate example of love:
“Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.”

Our veterans and active-duty service members live out a version of this love every day. They willingly step forward to protect friends, family, and fellow citizens they may never even meet. On Veterans Day, we have a beautiful opportunity to pray for them, for their families, and for the peace of our world.
Paws of Courage: Our Four-Legged Heroes
We can’t have a post about service without honoring the Military Working Dogs (MWDs)! These incredible dogs serve right alongside our soldiers. They are heroes with paws, trained for protection, detection, and search and rescue. They save lives and provide an unmatched bond of loyalty on the front lines.
And let’s not forget the amazing service dogs here at home. For many veterans returning with physical or emotional wounds, these dogs are a God-send. They provide independence for those with mobility challenges and offer incredible comfort and support for those healing from invisible wounds like PTSD. They are a living, breathing, tail-wagging example of comfort and faithful companionship.
How Your Family Can Show Your Thanks
Want to make your gratitude active? Here are a few simple, family-friendly ways to honor veterans:
- Pray Together: As a family, say a special prayer for veterans, active military members, and their families (pets included!).
- Attend a Local Event: Many communities have a Veterans Day parade or a special service. Bundle up, wave a flag, and show your support.
- Make Thank-You Cards: This is a perfect activity for kids! Have them draw pictures and write “Thank You” cards. You can send them to a local VA hospital or a veterans’ home.
- Support a Veteran-Focused Charity: Find a ministry or non-profit you trust that supports veterans, such as one that provides service dogs.
- Fly Your Flag: Displaying the American flag is a simple, visual way to show your patriotism and honor for those who’ve defended it.
- Just Say “Thank You”: If you know a veteran—a neighbor, a family member, or someone at church—make it a point to go to them, look them in the eye, and say, “Thank you for your service.” Those simple words mean the world.
